#9 in a series of ten oil paintings called “The Northwestern Flowers in Bottles Series.”
On the blustery autumn day that I went flower shopping for this project, poppies were nowhere to be found in Milwaukee. Fortunately for me, The Private Gardener Flower shop had some beautiful silk poppies in stock so I bought one for this project. ”poppy“ is the only flower in this series that isn’t based on a real flower.
Hopefully I was able to breathe some life into this close representation and create the feeling of paper-thin petals.
I wasn't particularly attached to this painting when it when it was first completed, but for some reason it has grown on me to become on of my favorites.
The bottle that holds the poppy is especially sentimental for me. On our tenth wedding anniversary, our first child was only six weeks old. So unfortunately, due to the huge change our life had just taken, gift-giving wasn’t high on my list of priorities that year.
My husband however, stopped at The Private Gardener (funny coincidence...) and found a set of three bottles that looked just perfect in our family room. Not only did I love the present, I loved that he went out of his way to look for something he knew I would enjoy. I am so blessed to be married to such a wonderful man!
