This landscape painting was inspired by a trip my husband Tim and I took in May, 2000. We spent a couple weeks driving up the west coast of California, from San Francisco to Seattle, as a celebration of Tim completing his Masters Degree in structural engineering.
One of the places we stayed along the way was this small town called Mendocino. (This is the town where scenes from the movie "Dying Young" were filmed.)
We arrived in Mendocino in the late afternoon and spent some time enjoying the beauty of this peaceful place as we walked a windy, winding path overlooking the deep blue ocean. We wondered what it would be like to wake up every morning looking out on this incredible view. Since we have no plans to move to California, I thought the next best thing would be to capture the memory on film and then later create a painting to recreate the feeling of that warm sunny afternoon.
So that’s what I did.
[ The painting called "mendocino" can now be viewed in person, along the shores of Milwaukee's lakefront, as it is part of the Lake Express high-speed ferry's permanent collection of paintings. http://www.lake-epress.com ]
