“seasons of life”

oil on canvas
60" x 48"

I began this painting with the simple goal of creating something restful. As I started at the top of the canvas and moved my way down, working in sections, it struck me that life happens in a similar fashion. It is a sandwich of experiences layered upon each other — the seasons of life — that make us who we are.

No matter what circumstances God allows to enter my life, it seems there’s never just pure joy or pure pain for very long, but rather an ebb and flow of the two extremes melding together as time flows along and the seasons change. I am encouraged by the fact that God is fully aware of the ratio of joy to pain in my life. He will never portion out more (of either) than I can handle at any given time.

Just as it is the testing of our faith that develops perseverance and makes us mature and complete, it is GOD ALONE who can provide TRUE REST, regardless of what flavor season we may be experiencing.

(1) My soul finds rest in god alone; my salvation comes from him. (2) He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. — Psalm 62:1–2
