“god of wonders”

oil on canvas
48" x 24"

This painting was inspired by Psalm 29, which talks about God’s holiness and power. I was specifically struck by the fact that even though He has command over the “mighty waters,” God chooses to give strength to His people and to bless them with peace.

Having spent time both on and near the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, it’s mind-boggling to me to think that these immensely vast bodies of water could ruled by anyone. Yet on the third day of creation, “…God said ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry ground ‘land’ and the gathered waters He called ‘seas.’ And God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:9-10) The beauty and majesty of any large body of water never cease to inspire within me feelings of awe for the incomprehensible power of God.

One line from a favorite song of mine says “You scatter the stars across the heavens, You come close enough to hear me call.” After more than 20 years of having a personal relationship with the Lord, I’m still totally amazed that the God of the Universe, the creator of the heavens and earth, would be interested in ME — a mere spec of sand on the unending beach of eternity. Why would a perfectly holy and all-powerful God choose to love me as His own child, caring deeply about the most intimate and insignificant details of my life? I’m quite sure I’ll never fully grasp this concept until I get to heaven. However until then, I intend to continue to living a life full of gratitude and love for my Heavenly Father who is truly, THE GOD OF WONDERS.

“(1)Ascribe to the Lord, O mighty ones, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. (2)Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

(3)The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. (4)The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the lord is majestic. (5)The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. (6)He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. (7)The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning. (8)The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh. (9)The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

(10)The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. 11The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.” — Psalm 29
